Have you even stopped for just one moment and thought about conversations you’ve had with people and thought to yourself, “why did I say that?” I’m amazed at all the unique phrases that we use and I’ve thought from time to time, “where did these phrases come from?”
The search has now ended, well at least some of it. In this book you will find a plethora of short phrases and words and a brief description which explains their origins. For example, do you know where the word “Diesel” comes from? How about the phrase “Caught Red-handed?” Many of these and more can be found in this anthology of word/phrases. Garrision has really done his research and if you’re curiosity overtakes you and you’re dying to know why we say what we say, you should pick up a copy.

*I received this book as a complimentary review copy from Thomas Nelson Publishers through their BookSneeze.com book review program. The result is that child dies. Christian education alone really nurtures personality because it alone gives the child air and food…. How, then, do you expect to build anything positively Christian or theistic upon a foundation which is the negation of Christianity and theism?…. No teaching of any sort is possible except in Christian schools.”

Cornelius Van Til,
“Foundations of Christian Education"
(Presbyterian & Reformed, 1990)

John Calvin, commenting on Ephesians 6:4, says:

“It is not the will of God that parents shall … corrupt their children. Let their conduct towards their children be … to guide them in the fear of the Lord, and correct them also when they go astray.”

This presupposes that parents are living out the command in Deuteronomy 6. The article was written under the title Is the Era of Age Segregation Over?

I'm glad to see that people are beginning to see a problem with the way we do church, especially the way we view and organize "youth ministry." However there is a difference of presupposition that Shelley, O'Brien, and Powell are missing. Voddie Baucham points out something really interesting in his blog post titled Fuller Youth Institute: Right Questions... Wrong Presuppositions .
He says this...

Missing this question actually points to the larger
presuppositional differencebetween a study like
this and the reformation God's Spirit is working
in churches around the nation. Instead of a concern
for a biblical pattern of ministry, the basis of the study
seems to have grown from a sociological and
psychological concern. This certainly seems to be
the case for many churches as well.
In so many ways, our church culture believes
it has more relevant messages and methods than Scripture.
Friends, we couldn't be more wrong.
Our enslavement to novelty is nothing short of idolatry.

We cannot pattern out ministry after sociological and psychological concerns. Is that the pattern our church was built on. I think we all should take a closer look at what Scripture is telling us how to do church. It is important as pastors, elders, deacons, teachers, and church attenders to understand the Biblical approach in how we are to not only worship God but how to disciple and evangelize to this generation and those to come.

Toward Inclusion: Lesbians sue doctor

I just read this article on a case of fertility treatment for lesbians. There was a particular lesbian couple who wanted to have babies. They went to a fertility doctor, who was a Christian, and he told them that their lifestyle couldn't allow them to have babies. However he did offer them fertility medication and also recommended some other doctors who didn't have any moral standards to go by. So you would think that this couple would be thankful for the doctors advice. That was not the case. They sued the doctor, his medical establishment, and won! Here is a quote from the article written by one news now website.

The statement issued by North Coast was encouraging, said Jennifer Pizer, Benitez's attorney. "It shows a journey that our whole society is taking together, away from intolerance and towards inclusion," she said.

"Toward inclusion!!!" So what about the rapist, pedophiles, polygamist, child abusers, or murderers? Shouldn't they be included too? Does this not strike a nerve? Can we not see the double standard that is being presented? These people say they are being inclusive, yet at the same time they are excluding the Christian worldview. Is it because we have become a nation described in Romans 2. That God has given us over to our own selves. That we have allowed our hearts to be hardened that we no longer rely on God's truth but seek man's truth. I think we need to return to what the apostles were teaching in Acts. To stop our idolatry (relying on our own ways), turn to God (look to Christ, God in flesh), and repent (in the turning process to God, we don't by God's grace turn back to those idolatrous things, but continuously run toward the cross).

How to Wake Men Up!!!

I just read this article that got me thinking about our future generations. The article really doesn't mention anything about succeeding generations, rather it deals with a recent survey done in 2008 that showed an increase in a claim to "no religion." The article is really short take a look at it for yourself here.

This article stated that a majority of these individuals are young, politically independent minded males. This really rubs me the wrong way, because I start thinking about how all these young men are going to be our next generation. They will replace us. My biggest concern is How will I set an example to Wake Men up from this slothful pit they have so easily slipped themselves into??? My answer to that would be to point them toward Christ. Because it is only by Him that their eyes can be opened and His truth can change their hearts. So I must shout it from the top of my lungs....

WAKE UP MEN, TURN AWAY FROM YOUR SKEPTICISM AND HUMANISTIC THINKING, REPENT, AND TURN TOWARD CHRIST!

Books for $18.00

These are some books I purchased a while back from Canon Press. If you are tired of being in debt, I highly recommend trying this 12 week course out. My wife and I are going to try it even though we seem to have our finances somewhat under control. I think its a good thing to always be teachable. Yet both of us are, in the words of Dave Ramsey, "getting mad" at it and are taking charge of our finances. Life is horrible living under the tent of a lender. So break free by becoming debt free!!! My wife and I are excited about this. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
John 8:31-32

I've heard this verse numerous times, but only part of the verse has been emphasized. The part I'm referring to here is "you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." It sounds great and even can make someone feel good, yet it is so far from what Jesus is getting at. It is interesting to note that Jesus is giving an "if, then" statement. If you do "x," then "x" will occur. It's a simple statement yet we ignore the first half of Jesus statement to hold to his teaching. I wonder why?

Are there any sayings you thought the Bible said something, yet when you read them into context with the Scriptures it was something totally different? It is public opinion that moulds our laws and institutions; and one of the greatest forces for moulding this opinion has been the church with its Bible. This past week we looked at the mind. Philippians chapter 2 speaks of putting on the mind of Christ.

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

By setting his mind on God, Christ humble himself and became obedient to death. Having that kind of mind is what I want to strive for. But it takes a daily renewal...

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

...its something to think about.

Watered Down Theology

This quote I found online really challenged me and my perspective on the church and its purpose of teaching theology.

"The churches of our time seem to believe that God exists to save man and keep him happy. Theology is therefore only studied as an adjunct to the doctrine of salvation."

Theology is a scary word to say in most churches today. I know there are many reasons as to why this is the case, however, I'd rather focus more on ways to reform this type of thinking. My purpose isn't to shove some theological perspective down ones throat, but rather to strive to be as God honoring as possible, by His grace. I don't want to settle for some 3 ways to make me a better Christian. We can't just stop at salvation, because there is more to it than just salvation. What happens after salvation? What about sanctification? Uh oh I'm using terminology that the average joe doesn't understand....what's a minister of the gospel to do? I encourage anyone who is reading this to take a look at this post: Kingdom-Centered Theology

Biblical Financial Advice

Tough times call for tough measures. Our home that we purchased a little over a year ago apparently had owners who didn't take good care of the land. For some reason or another they planted random plants, trees, and flowers in odd spots all around the yard, so I was trying to fix this crazy confusion. In the process of destroying...I mean up rooting a pompous grass I found a little creature....

                                                                                                                       that's right our first snake....

well what was left of him.

I was digging up dirt around the pompous grass and several times during the process I came across several earth worms. I know we all have problems and issues in our lives, however despite these circumstances I have come to enjoy the simple things that God has brought into my life.

First I am thankful for my wife. She is the greatest woman in the world. My dearest friend, treasured helper, and wonderful companion. I love her so much and have learned so much from her that has truly impacted my life. Love you Sarah!

Second, I am thankful for my 3 beautiful girls that God has entrusted me with. Proverbs 29:18

I came across this verse in one of the most difficult chapters I've ever read. In Foundations of Christian Scholarship, Gary North writes about Max Weber and his influence in Sociology.

Just as I was thinking that I would not gain anything from this chapter, this verse shone as a beacon of light. I do not believe it was the author's intent to focus this chapter on this particular passage, however this verse caught my attention. I've heard it said many times that "Where there is no vision, the people perish" Unfortunately, the latter part of this verse is left out. The more I read Scripture the more I am convinced and convicted that God's Law Word is the only standard to live by. Government won't save me, free health care won't satisfy me, nor will the crumbling public schools educate me. Only God's Law will make me happy. That's something worth considering.

30 Hour Famine

On March 6th and 7th students at New Covenant Church starved for 30 hours to save lives around the world. I was reading an article out of a magazine which discussed the first 12 verses of this section. Matthew 5:1-12 is most commonly know as the Beatitudes. I have never truly understood nor do I currently understand all the implications about this passage. However, in reading this article written by R. J. Rushdoony, I have a little more insight as to what Christ was saying about "meekness, mercy, and being pure in heart." Everyone out there should take 5 minutes to read this article.

Fasting

Coming March 6th and 7th the students from New Covenant in Greenwood, SC will be going without food for 30 hours.

A month ago I watched this highly anticipated film and so I just wanted to spend a little time discussing some thoughts I had. If you haven’t seen the film I defiantly recommend it, however I believe that this movie is one that opens up for a tremendous discussion afterwards. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are an incredible acting duo. Their presence on the screen is extraordinary.

This film presents a struggle with our finite lives and also displays how life is a vapor (James 4:14). If you have seen the previews you already know this story is about two gentlemen from completely different backgrounds and social statuses in life, upon which they both discover that their lives are soon to end due to cancer. Freeman decides to rim anis on his college days and attempts to create a list of things to accomplish before his life ends. Nicholson discovers what Freeman thinks are hopeless plans and wants to make them a reality and so the fun begins.

Throughout the film there is a great deal of dialogue that discusses “faith & reason.” Nicholson’s character attempts to separate the two and just relates life to being “wheels on a bus.” I encourage everyone, if you have the time, to sit down and watch this film. Christians can use films which Hollywood produces as resources to proclaim the truth of the gospel and explain the truth of the Christian worldview. However, these different tactics many times seem to cover or hide the message of the truth. I was on my way to church the other day browsing for a station to feed my talk show buzz. I stumbled across one of these Evangelists. I have no idea whom this person was but one of his statements caught my attention. He was addressing the issue of suicide and explaining how “suicide was on the rise.” From there he spoke of how people need hope, but then he said this; “We just have to let these people know that they have greatness inside of them.” WHAT?!?!? How have Christians gotten so far from the truth in offering the hope of Jesus Christ to the lost? What has caused this change in direction? I wonder sometimes if it is good intentions mixed with bad theology. Then my next question is does that make it okay even if the theology or the message was bad? Maybe it’s the fact that the concept of grace isn’t being taught so well. I’m just confused at how telling people they have “greatness inside them” correlates with Romans 3:11, 23; 8:7 and Ephesians 2:3.

I know I’m a young 24 year old male with a Bible/Theology degree who doesn’t have everything together, but in my theological training one of my professors told me that one of the most important things a minister of the gospel (this includes everyone who professes to be a Christian) should do before they reach the lost is to get your “theological ducks in a row.” 2 Timothy 2:15 says; “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” I’d just like to take a few minutes to dissect two important words or phrases. The word “approved” in the greek is δόκιμος, which means assayed, examined, tested, tried, proved, approved. The phrase “rightly handling” comes from the greek word ὀρθοτομέω meaning to cut straight, to divide right. I understand that the context of this verse speaks of not to “quarrel about words,” but it appears that presenting ourselves as one “approved…rightly handling the word of truth” is important. We should especially know how to handle the word of truth when it comes to proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ.

You might be thinking what’s the big deal? Maybe you’re thinking here goes the “big” solution. I don’t necessarily have a solution, but rather I offer a challenge to all everyone who professes Christ as Savior and Lord. My hopes are that this challenges someone to read the Word of God for themselves. Enough babbling just read the Word.

The Joy of a Child and the Frustrations of a Society

I am a father of a 7th month old daughter named Abigail. I never imagined in my life how much joy a little being could bring to someone’s life. When she smiles it makes me smile, but it’s a bit of happiness I have never experienced before. I believe that only parents can appreciate that kind of happiness. I love coming home to my daughter and watching her grow up. It amazes me how society looks down on having a family, because to “be an American” is to achieve things on your own accord, or one word that I think sums it up is to “be an American” means to be autonomous. If you don’t know what that word means please look it up. I’m not your mother and I don’t want to baby people, plus it would do you some good to open a dictionary once in a while.

I look back at my short life lived and there is no way I’d be where I am now without God. I’ve realized I am nothing without nor can I do anything without him. I am yet still astonished at how society looks down upon those with huge families, even families of just 3 or 4 are shunned and disregarded. What about what God’s Word says “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.” (Psalms 127:3). A heritage and reward WOW that’s incredible. Father let us not forget these wonderful gifts You have given to us. If you haven’t spent time with your child must this week, take the time to do something with them. Now I’m not the type to put a sign, create a neto t-shirt, or even design a great slogan to convince people of it. However I have lately been pondering over the aspect of this message that gets portrayed with the idea that “Jesus is Coming Soon!”

First, it appears that many people are either lazy or apathetic when it comes to sharing the gospel because “Jesus is coming” and they have their ticket so they can sit back and relax. Second, we get so caught up in this idea that in the end things are just going to get worse and worse for Christians and it appears like this mentality of doom and gloom.

Generally I am not one to put myself out here like this but I do believe something needs to be addressed about these issues. First, we as Christians or Christ followers should shake off their apathetic ways and get back to the heart of the gospel of faithfulness and obedience (yeah I know what you’re thinking, “it sounds so simple just boil it all down in two words,” but it’s true). Second, could evangelical Christians wake up and smell the coffee. CHRIST HAS WON!!! He was victorious at the cross, and because of that price God’s kingdom will continue to go forth victorious. Why then do we hang our heads with this doom and gloom attitude.

Alas, I know this may not be read by many of views and will be lost out there in the cyberspace we call the internet, but if you’re out there reading this I hope you stop and take into consideration these thoughts.
